When it's Over by Holly - An Update

Well, wow! 12 days ago, we published Holly's poem that she wrote as part of the weekly 100 Word Challenge and the response has been wonderful.

As a reminder, here is her poem again:

First of all, we received some responses on Facebook, Twitter and the blog post itself:

We decided to see if we could create a performance of Holly's poem and enlisted the help of sports commentator and public speaker Sam Roberts. Below is the video we produced:

And, it doesn't end there! Each week, some of the entries into the 100 Word Challenge are put into the 'Showcase'. Holly's was added and artist Terry Culkin has illustrated Holly's poem for her as a result of her poem being in the Weekly Showcase.

Showcase Week#32

Again, well done Holly, but also to all our students currently working so hard from home.

Why Primary School Children Should Be Tested

Last week's writing task was to take on the role of a parent, pupil, teacher or member of the community and write about testing of primary pupils. Here, Emma takes on the role of a parent and give a view:

As a parent of a primary school student, I am writing to tell you why my child, along with many others, should take tests throughout each year. I feel that it could help them a lot with their education.
My first point is that it can help teachers to understand what stage the children are at with their learning abilities. Using the results from the tests, the teachers can figure out what subjects a child is better at. This can ensure that everyone is doing a task that is suitable for them, and their peers. While some children may understand some subjects, they may find others challenging. Testing children can give a basic judgement of this.
Furthermore, when the children look back at their results, they can figure out some things for themselves too, like what they may need to work on at home. This gives them extra opportunities to become more independent with their learning, and to get a better understanding of all subjects, across the curriculum.
Additionally, some students enjoy testing! It gives them a chance to reflect on their current knowledge, and what they can do to improve. Whilst taking a test, as silence is usually expected, it can give the students a chance to learn individually. Having their own space, not having to think about anything else, can be very useful to some children.
Considering this, I understand that the pressure of tests can get to some people. We can try to avoid this by reassuring the students that, although they are marked with a final score, the point of tests is to help them with future learning, not the fact that someone else may have scored higher than them.
I hope that you think about all the points I have made, and continue to test primary school students throughout each and every year.
Sincerely, Emma L

Lego Tommy

As part of his family's, and our local community's, VE Day celebrations, Johan made and displayed a Tommy statue made from Lego. We think it's rather impressive.

When it's Over by Holly (100WC)

For this week's 100 Word Challenge, the children were asked to write a piece of 100 words in length and include "but should I really do this?". Below is Holly's writing. We think you'll agree it is stunning and sums up life in May 2020.

Well done Holly!

Everyone reading this, please share it with someone else. It'll likely bring a ray of sunshine to their day too.

Star Wars Pictures

As part of our "May the 4th Be With You" celebration, the children created some space that was 'out of this galaxy'!

Well done Joanna, Abi and Joseph.

Freya's 100WC

We were ready. James, Ian and I headed out the door and into the wilderness. Suddenly, Ian pushed me into the woods and we disappeared into the night. Ian knew James and I were scared of the dark, so why did he do it? “James,” I shouted, “Where are you!” There was no reply. Did Ian push James into the woods? I wasn’t sure as I couldn’t see anything. CRASH! “Who’s there?” I questioned. No reply again. I was so petrified. I pulled my gun out of my pocket and was ready to shoot, but should I really do this?...

Barney's TWO 100WCs

It was 11pm sharp and Harriet and I were ready for this adventure. We packed all our stuff and sneaked out of our windows. We disappeared into the night as we crept along the shadows and dashed through alleyways. On the way to our destination (the woods) we ran into the herculean school bully, his name was Dwayne. We tried to creep past him but it was no use, his hearing was like a cats. All he had to do was stick a hand out and grab us and that’s what he did. His fist came up to our faces!

“ Go now!” roared the gang leader. Ryan crept towards the house and got his crowbar out but thought to himself.
“But should I really do this?”. If he didn’t he would be chased and eventually shot to death by the whole gang. Slowly he got to the house and realised something thi wasn’t any old ordinary house this was the house that the creepy old man used to live when the gang and Ryan were younger. Legend has it that the old man's ghost still haunts the place. Gathering all his courage Ryan lifted up the crowbar and swung it.

The Tree - Mia's 100WC

Sun was shining, children were playing, except one person, Joe. He was bored on this summer day and didn’t know what to do. He would usually go on adventures, but his mum caught him on his last one and said if he goes on an adventure, he will be banned from his electronics for a year! But he didn’t care now, so he climbed out a window and hid behind a tree. “But should I really do this,” he thought. “Yeah it’s fine,” his mind said back. SWOOSH! He was pushed into the tree and was sucked in.
