Ancient Maya

As part of our Ancient Maya history topic, 6CC have been doing some guided, creative writing in small groups to create a whole-class short story.

Using the photographs below, pupils imagined that they were explorers who had just come across a Mayan city.

Here are some ideas from Annabel:

Here is what we came up with as a whole class, can you spot our exciting sentences?

Cautiously, we approached the humungous Mayan city. The city was booming and boiling: people were busy working while children were running around. The guards, who looked like warriors, watched us suspiciously as we gazed at the jade that adorned the city walls. As I reached down, the guards stopped in shock; they gathered in a group and marched towards us like we were food. Slowly creeping backwards, attempting to get away, we found we were cornered…
The six alarming guards looked down on us like we were a disgrace to their city. Frightened, yet slightly curious, we all stood dead of noise and movement. They all bore the same petrifying stare that held an inhumane force: one that me, nor my friends, had ever seen in our distant lands. Looking into their eyes was like being sucked into a black hole: a force that was impossible to escape. It was like we were in a trance. The more we tried to look away from their black, fiery eyes, the more our eyes disobeyed.
