New day, new week, new history topic. 6CC have been learning about the ancient Maya tribe, that inhabited Mexico and Central America from 2600 BC to 1800 BC. Firstly, the class kick-started their topic by doing some guided writing (that somehow led to the creation of black fire) that is on the blog now! Now, after the phenomenal writing was completed, the class split up into small groups and started

creating their own own play of the Spanish Conquistadors (that came way after the Mayan age) discovering a Mayan ruin. Some of these are starting to look really good.

International Peace Day

For International Peace Day, 6CC have been reflecting on what peace means to them. On a post-it note, the pupils finished the sentence 'Peace is...' and stuck these on the whiteboard. Here are some of their responses:

Following the whole school assembly on Monday, Ms Eardley asked pupils to consider what their personal pledges to promote peace would be. Here are some of 6CC's:

It was not enough to just write this on a piece of paper; 6CC wanted to share their pledges with the rest of the school. Yasmin came up with a brilliant idea of drawing a big peace sign on the playground for everyone to write their personal pledges inside. Take a look:

To continue to promote this message of peace, 6CC's Peace Lily acts as a growing symbol of peace and reflection. Next time you're outside Year 6, see if you can spot the Peace Lily!

Natural art

As part of our art topic this term, Year Six have been completing some observational art on natural objects. There have been all sorts of objects brought in - from crab shells to feathers and dead coral!

Experimenting with a variety of techniques (pencil sketching, watercolour and oil pastels), the pupils chose their preferred medium and created a final piece of art for display. Below are some finished pieces from (top left, clockwise) Annabel, Sophia, Thomas, Livvie, Jenna and Joshua.

6JE took their art to the Year Six corridor, where they used whiteboard pens to sketch their objects.

Most of the art will feature in the pupils' Best Books, so watch this space!

Top tips

This week in maths, we are practising using the greater than > and less than < signs.

To help them with their work, Olivia and Owen created their own strategies to help them.

What strategies do you use to help with your learning?

Ancient Maya

As part of our Ancient Maya history topic, 6CC have been doing some guided, creative writing in small groups to create a whole-class short story.

Using the photographs below, pupils imagined that they were explorers who had just come across a Mayan city.

Here are some ideas from Annabel:

Here is what we came up with as a whole class, can you spot our exciting sentences?

Cautiously, we approached the humungous Mayan city. The city was booming and boiling: people were busy working while children were running around. The guards, who looked like warriors, watched us suspiciously as we gazed at the jade that adorned the city walls. As I reached down, the guards stopped in shock; they gathered in a group and marched towards us like we were food. Slowly creeping backwards, attempting to get away, we found we were cornered…
The six alarming guards looked down on us like we were a disgrace to their city. Frightened, yet slightly curious, we all stood dead of noise and movement. They all bore the same petrifying stare that held an inhumane force: one that me, nor my friends, had ever seen in our distant lands. Looking into their eyes was like being sucked into a black hole: a force that was impossible to escape. It was like we were in a trance. The more we tried to look away from their black, fiery eyes, the more our eyes disobeyed.

Legoland

On Monday, Year Six visited Legoland to kickstart their DT project for this term - building and programming fairground rides using lego. As well as enjoying the rides, the pupils took part in a WeDo lego workshop where they built robots and programmed them to race against one another.

Below is a short newspaper report about the day, from 6CC's News Reporters Marianne and Kayleigh.

On Monday everyone enjoyed the trip to Legoland. There was a crazy ride called Mia’s Riding Adventure, which was everyone’s favourite. We also went on the Dragon rollercoaster, the Jolly Rocker, Scarab Bouncer, the cars (where we all got a legoland driving licence), the brand new Ninjago ride and many more!
