As part of their writing lessons, 6BH rewrote 'The Twelve Days of Christmas' to reflect their experiences of the autumn term in Year Six. Today, they performed their song in assembly.
Welcome to the Year Six website. On this website, we will be sharing examples of our children's work. This page is a workshop containing examples of learning in action. The work will not be the children's 'final draft’.

Darwin's Finches - 6MR science investigation
In science, we have been learning about natural selection and evolution. Today, the children learnt about Darwin's Finches. We looked at how their beaks were adapted to the type of diet they have which Darwin once observed.
We set up a science investigation to explore this. We used different types of forceps (representing different types of bird beak) to pick up different types of seeds. The children will think about their conclusions tomorrow.

Maya maths in 6MR
Today, we took our history learning to the playground. Who needs pencil and paper when you have chalk and a playground? Not 6MR!
The children learnt how the Maya used maths and made number sentences using the Maya code.
Below are some pictures of their work:

A Minecraft Mansion
After a week of testing, Year Six worked together in a team to find out how many blocks they would need to collect to build a Minecraft Mansion in a multi-step problem. This was a wonderful activity for the children to act as Maths coaches to understand what makes a good leader and challenge them to make sure everyone in the group participated. The Maths coaches reminded the children to take turns, listen actively and they encouraged children to share their opinions one at a time. After an hour of calculating and solving how many blocks were needed for the walls, roof, floors, windows and garden, the children presented their findings to the class, practising one of their essential skills (presenting).

6MR Emma Watson biographies
In September, Year 6 were busy researching the life of Emma Watson. The children were amazed and inspired by her achievements so far and thoroughly enjoyed writing their own biographies about her life and achievements.
Below are some of the finished final drafts from children in 6MR. Some truly stunning writing! They have been tweeted to Emma Watson herself too! We'll have to wait to see if we get a reply...

6MR - Maya history
6MR are currently enjoying exploring Maya history and have recently learned about the Spanish Conquistadors.
They worked well in teams to imagine what it'd be like to explore the tropical rainforests in Central America and stumble upon ancient Maya ruins. They mind-mapped powerful adjectives to describe how they may have felt and then used these to create some exciting sentences.
Diary entries from the viewpoint of a Spanish Conquistador to be written soon!
